Othello As A Shakespearean Play - 1697 Words

Othello is a Shakespearean play that takes place in Venice, Italy. It centers on the tragedy of a Moor, recently named General of the Venetian army. Othello deals with many issues, first beginning with race. Othello goes through several other things ranging from jealousy to betrayal. Most importantly, he has to deal with love and loss thereof. There are several characters in the play Tragedy of Othello. First, there’s the main character Othello. He is generally identified by his ethnicity, being called â€Å"The Moor†. He has recently been named General of the Venetian military (Shakespeare, 2008). Othello has just married Desdemona. She is the daughter of the Venetian senator, Brabantio. Iago is Othello’s captain. His wife Emilia is Desdemona’s servant. Michael Cassio is Othello’s most loyal and loved lieutenant. Trouble arises when Othello promotes him, instead of Iago. Other characters of Othello include: Bianca, Cassio’s lover; Roderigo, Venetian who is in love with Othello’s wife Desdemona; Gratiano, Brabantio’s brother; Lodovico, Brabantio’s kinsman and Desdemona’s cousin; Montano, Othello’s predecessor to the government of Cyprus; and a host of other servants, senators, officers, and Gentlemen. Othello is a true tragedy. A tragedy is a form of drama based on human suffering. Shakespeare has written many tragedies including King Lear, Macbeth, and Hamlet.
